The Longmont Astronomical Society will meet 7 to 9 pm in the Community Room (Rm #1480-82) at the Front Range Community College, 2190 Miller Drive, Longmont, CO on June 19, 2008. The speaker will be Dr. Emily Haynes who will discuss the Phoenix spacecraft, the mission and the science experiments - what we have to gain by studying the "frozen north" of Mars about planet climate, seasonal variation, what happened to the water, ability of the planet to have supported life, etc. In July Dr. Haynes will be at the Phoenix Science Operation Center in Tuscon, Arizona as the investigations of the polar regions of Mars begins.
The Phoenix spacecraft landed on Mars at 4:53 pm MDT on May 25th. The first images have been downlinked and the soil sampling has begun.
