Introduction to PixInsight by Stephen Garretson
Stephen will demo narrowband image processing using PixInsight such as going from narrowband mono images to SHO or HOO. Along the way, he will demonstrate the following tools:

  • Gradient removal tool using AutomatedBackgroundExtraction. This delivers two frames each time it is triggered, the image with gradient removed, and what that gradient looks like.
  • Registering masters from three filters so the stars are aligned. Sharing what each master looks like, especially showing the difference between the typically strong Ha vs much weaker OIII or SII masters.
  • Using PixelMath to assign color to channels, the noise reduction tool SCNR to remove green, combined with CurvesTranformation to boost

Eddie will demo using this free and powerful tool to process deep sky images.

 
Using Photoshop’s curves tool by Jim Pollock

  • Curves tool in PhotoShop can be daunting to use.  Jim will show a simple way to use it to stretch an image.
  • He will also show some simple techniques for automating DSLR image capture and explain Canon’s automatic dark frame subtraction and whether or not to use it.
